LECTURE 10:
A WOMAN, A CHILD &
A BEAST WITH 10 HORNS

by Kay Arthur

Continuation of the explanation of Daniel 7

Every believer needs to be like the first century Bereans in their approach to the Word of God and this is especially true when it comes to interpretation of prophetic passages...

Now these (Bereans) were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received (take hold of = a deliberate and ready reception of what is offered) the word (logos) with great eagerness, examining (present tense = constantly doing this, used by Greeks to describe the preliminary investigation for gathering evidence for trial), the Scriptures DAILY, to see whether these things were so. (Acts 17:11)

In Daniel 7 there are 4 beasts mentioned with a significant emphasis on the Fourth Beast, the "dreadful and terrifying" ("DT") beast, the beast which parallels the fourth kingdom in Daniel 2, which was illustrated by the legs of iron and feet (with 10 toes) composed of iron mixed with clay.

Daniel 7:7-8 elaborates on the DT beast explaining that

''After this (time phrase - after the beast like a leopard) I kept looking in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, dreadful and terrifying and extremely strong; and it had large iron teeth. It devoured and crushed, and trampled down the remainder with its feet; and it was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns.8 While I was contemplating the horns, behold, another horn, a little one, came up among them, (= 11 horns) and three of the first horns were pulled out by the roots before it; and behold, this horn possessed eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth uttering great boasts.

The Dreadful
& Terrifying Beast

Notice that the 10 horns will precede the coming up of the Little Horn (an 11th one) and that three of the 10 horns will be pulled out leaving 8 horns.

Remember also that the Ten horns parallel the teaching in Daniel 2 of 10 toes. Daniel states that in the days of those kings a Stone cut without hands will crush the feet of the statue.

Daniel 2:34 "You continued looking until a Stone was cut out without hands, and it struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay, and crushed them. 35 "Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were crushed all at the same time, and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away so that not a trace of them was found. But the Stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.....

42 "And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of pottery, so some of the kingdom will be strong and part of it will be brittle. 43 "And in that you saw the iron mixed with common clay, they will combine with one another in the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, even as iron does not combine with pottery. 44 "And in the days of those kings (time phrase) the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, and that kingdom will not be left for another people; it will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself endure forever. 45 "Inasmuch as you saw that a Stone was cut out of the mountain without hands and that it crushed the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold, the great God has made known to the king what will take place in the future; so the dream is true, and its interpretation is trustworthy."

As Daniel keeps looking in Daniel 7 he sees the Ancient of Days and what is clearly a picture of judgment.

9 "I kept looking until thrones were set up, and the Ancient of Days took His seat; His vesture was like white snow, and the hair of His head like pure wool. His throne was ablaze with flames, Its wheels were a burning fire. 10 A river of fire was flowing and coming out from before Him; thousands upon thousands were attending Him, and myriads upon myriads were standing before Him. The court sat, and the books were opened. 11 Then I kept looking because of the sound of the boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept looking until the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and given to the burning fire. 12 "As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but an extension of life was granted to them for an appointed period of time. 13 I kept looking in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, and He came up to the Ancient of Days and was presented before Him. 14 And to Him was given dominion, glory and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations, and men of every language might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion which will not pass away; and His kingdom is one which will not be destroyed.

Remembering that prophecy unfolds in a progressive manner (see special revelation of God), when you begin to study the book of the Revelation you want to be careful to observe for a time when you see a beast who is destroyed and is eventually given to the burning fire (Rev 19:20-21+). For now, the book of Daniel is presenting a panoramic picture, giving an overview of Gentile dominion of the world up until the time when it will be abruptly crushed and brought to an end by the Stone which will set up a Kingdom that will never be destroyed. This description fits well with the period in which Jesus Christ will return to rule on the earth (during the so-called "millennium"). You may not agree with a literal millennial rule but you do believe in the literal return of Jesus Christ.

To summarize...

Daniel 7 up to this point describes 4 beasts, 10 horns, a little horn (LH), judgment given, One like the Son of Man coming to the Ancient of Days and being given a dominion. Comparing the beasts to the parts of the statue in Daniel 2 reveals more details about these prophecies, especially the fourth kingdom, and thus demonstrates the principle of progressive revelation. The details regarding these kingdoms will be further expanded in Daniel 8 and Daniel 11-12.

Daniel is a long study and you need to resist the temptation to not complete the resist the temptation to not finish this course because of it's length and difficulty. Your Adversary, the devil, the enemy of your soul does not want you to understand these things because he does not want you to understand what his demise is going to be, what happens in his kingdom when he is cast out of heaven to earth. Hang in there!

Here is the interpretation of the four beasts...

Daniel 7:17 'These great beasts, which are four in number, are four kings who will arise from the earth.''

Remember that "Kings" and "Kingdoms" are synonyms.

Daniel 7:18 "But the saints of the Highest One will receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, for all ages to come."

Saints is synonymous with "holy ones", those who have been set apart by God and for God (this transaction occurring the moment one believes in the Messiah, whether OT saints or NT saints). This is the first time Daniel tells us the saints also receive the kingdom and possess it forever.

Daniel 7:19 Gives more detail about the Fourth Kingdom. If you read the commentaries, you will discover that some writers feel this is a reference to the empire of Greece but Greece did not trample down and crush the kingdoms it conquered.

"Then I desired to know the exact meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others, exceedingly dreadful, with its teeth of iron and its claws of bronze, and which devoured, crushed, and trampled down the remainder with its feet, (Daniel 7:19)

Daniel 7:20 ''10 horns that were on its head'' which parallels the 10 toes that were on the great statue's feet in Daniel 2.

"the meaning of the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn which came up, and before which three of them fell, namely, that horn which had eyes and a mouth uttering great boasts, and which was larger in appearance than its associates.

Daniel 7:23 Underline ''the whole earth''

"Thus he said: 'The fourth beast will be a fourth kingdom on the earth, which will be different from all the other kingdoms, and it will devour the whole earth and tread it down and crush it.

Daniel 7:24 ''out of this kingdom'' - Which kingdom? the fourth kingdom. What will come out of the fourth kingdom?

'As for the ten horns, out of this kingdom ten kings will arise; and another will arise after them, and he will be different from the previous ones and will subdue three kings."

The picture is that of a Little Horn arising after the 10 have assumed power (which makes 11 total). The Little Horn subdues 3 of the other kings.

Daniel 7:25 "And he will speak out against the Most High''

'And he will speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make alterations in times and in law; and they will be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time.

Who is ''he''? "He" is the Little Horn who is a boastful (note the repetition of this characteristic in Daniel 7:8, 11, 20) and will wear down the saints of the Highest One. So now you know how long the LITTLE HORN will war with the saints and they will be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time. What does this time phrase mean?

TIME, TIMES, AND HALF A TIME

This time period could be in units of months, years, days, etc but if we compare Scripture with Scripture (always the best commentary), especially observing Daniel 4 where ''seven periods of time'' equates with 7 years and interpret the text literally (always interpret literally unless the meaning defies common sense or is a metaphor or a simile) the phrase "TIME, TIMES & HALF A TIME" refers to 31/2 years or 1260 days. Keep this time period in mind, as it becomes very significant in the interpretation of the very end of the "latter days"!

The Little Horn's future is reiterated in the last section of Daniel...

26 'But the court will sit for judgment, and his (the Little Horn's) dominion will be taken away, annihilated and destroyed forever.

27 'Then (when? when the LH is destroyed forever) the sovereignty, the dominion, and the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Highest One; His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey Him (who? the Son of Man).' (Daniel 7:26-27)

Here is what we know about the "Little Horn" (LH): The LH is the 11th horn who makes war against the saints for probably. The LH is opposed to the Most High God and to the saints (because he speaks out against the Most High and wears down the saints) for 3.5 years and that when the court sits judgment is passed and the beast is slain and the LH's body is destroyed and given to the burning fire. (Daniel 7:11)

Now let's parallel our observations from Daniel 7 with an observation of Revelation 12...

Revelation 12

1 And a great SIGN appeared in heaven: a WOMAN clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; 2 and she was with child; and she cried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth. 3 And another SIGN appeared in heaven: and behold, a GREAT RED DRAGON having seven heads and TEN HORNS, and on his heads were seven diadems. 4 And his tail swept away a third of the stars of heaven, and threw them to the earth. And the DRAGON stood before the WOMAN who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth he might devour her child. 5 And she gave birth to a son, a MALE CHILD, who is TO RULE ALL THE NATIONS with a rod of iron; and her child was caught up to God and to His throne. 6 And the woman fled into the wilderness where she had a place prepared by God, so that there she might be nourished for 1260 DAYS.

As already discussed, if 1 year is 360 days and we multiply 3.5 years times 360 days/year we again arrive at 1260 days, a very critical time period in the end times events.

What or who is the "woman"? A "great sign" where the Greek word for "sign" (semeion) refers to a mark, token or something that distinguishes one from another and which could be used as a warning or could be a miraculous act (ie, miracles were often signs) such as found in the gospel of John

In Revelation 12, the "SIGN" acts as a distinguishing mark or characteristic of the woman and the dragon. So as we look at these distinguishing characteristics, we will learn something.

WOMAN: she was pregnant with child and was ready to give birth. When she's ready to give birth, there is ANOTHER SIGN...IN HEAVEN: "the great red dragon" trying to devour her child, a son (male) who is to RULE ALL NATIONS WITH A ROD OF IRON (He is not ruling but ''is'' to rule). This child is caught up to throne. THEN the woman fled into the wilderness for 1260 days (3.5 yr)

Who is the Woman? Who is the Child?
Who is the Dragon?

Revelation 12 tells us that

the great DRAGON ... the SERPENT of old who is called the DEVIL and SATAN, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. (Rev 12:9)

And thus we can interpret the dragon as the Serpent of old, the devil, Satan who deceives whole world.

Now let's digress for a moment to Revelation 1 which presents an outline (in verse 19) for the entire book:

Revelation 1:3 Blessed is he who reads and those who HEAR the words of the prophecy (the Revelation is prophecy written by John the Apostle while on the Isle of Patmos about 90AD), and HEED (people say don't teach prophecy because it's not practical--but when you UNDERSTAND prophecy, then you LIVE IN THE LIGHT of it -- this is what it means to ''HEED'' ) the things which are written in it; for the time is near. 4 John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace, from Him who is and who was and who is to come; and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne;5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the first-born of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us, and released us from our sins by His blood,6 and He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father; to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.7 BEHOLD, HE IS COMING WITH THE CLOUDS, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. Even so. Amen.

What did we just study in Daniel 7 about the Son of Man? He is COMING ON THE CLOUDS.

"I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him. (Daniel 7:13)

In Revelation 1:19 the risen Christ instructs John to...

"Write therefore the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall take place after these things."

This verse outlines the entire book of the Revelation as follows...

Revelation 1 = John saw the risen Lord

Revelation 2-3 = Things that are (the 7 churches existed)

Revelation 4-22 = Things which shall take place (future events)

Revelation 12 is an overview of history and describes the things which shall take place including the fate of the Dragon

Revelation 12:7 And there was war in heaven, Michael and his angels waging war with the DRAGON. And the DRAGON and his angels waged war, 8 and they were not strong enough, and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven. 9 And the GREAT DRAGON was thrown down, the SERPENT of old who is called the DEVIL and SATAN, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, who accuses them before our God day and night. 11 "And they (who? the brethren) overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even

The brethren were willing to die rather than deny (like Shadrach, et. al.)

Revelation 12:12 "For this reason, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and the sea, because the DEVIL has come down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has only a short time." 13 And when (note the timing ''when'' ) the DRAGON saw that HE was thrown down to the earth, HE persecuted the WOMAN who gave birth to the MALE CHILD. 14 And the two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, in order that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, where she was nourished for a TIME AND TIMES AND HALF A TIME (cf. Dan 7:25) from the presence of the serpent.

So we see a WOMAN fleeing into the wilderness in Rev 12:6. Why? Because the devil was cast down to the earth and sought to make war with the "woman".

Revelation 12:15 And the serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the WOMAN, so that he might cause HER to be swept away with the flood. 16 And the earth helped the WOMAN, and the earth opened its mouth and drank up the river which the dragon poured out of his mouth. 17 And the dragon was enraged with the WOMAN, and went off to make war with the rest of HER offspring, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.

REVELATION 12
WHO IS THE CHILD?
WHO IS THE WOMAN?

(Ed note: many if not most of the older commentaries have interpreted the "woman" as "the church". For example Adam Clarke writes "That the woman here represents the true Church of Christ most commentators are agreed.")

First let's determine who the woman's child is, by comparing Scripture with Scripture. Observe the phrase "rule...with a rod of iron." Where else is this phrase used in Scripture?

Ps 2:7 "I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, 'Thou art My Son, Today I have begotten Thee.

8 'Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Thine inheritance, And the [very] ends of the earth as Thy possession.

9 'Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron, Thou shalt shatter them like earthenware.' "

Rev 19:15 11 And I saw heaven opened; and behold, a white horse, and He who sat upon it is called Faithful and True; and in righteousness He judges and wages war.

12 And His eyes are a flame of fire, and upon His head are many diadems; and He has a name written upon Him which no one knows except Himself.

13 And He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood; and His name is called The Word of God.

14 And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses.

15 And from His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may smite the nations; and He will RULE THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty.

16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."

17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried out with a loud voice, saying to all the birds which fly in midheaven, "Come, assemble for the great supper of God;

18 in order that you may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders and the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them and the flesh of all men, both free men and slaves, and small and great."

19 And I saw THE BEAST and the kings of the earth and their armies, assembled to make war against Him who sat upon the horse, and against His army.

20 And THE BEAST was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of THE BEAST and those who worshipped his image; these two were thrown alive into the LAKE OF FIRE which burns with brimstone. (Have we seen a beast thrown into fire in Daniel 7?)

Few would argue that this refers to Jesus Christ, the One Who in both the Old Testament (see the psalm below) and the New Testament (John in the Revelation) is to rule with a "rod of iron"

WHO WAS CAUGHT UP TO HEAVEN? Jesus Christ. When Christ was born Herod attempted to kill him (Herod is associated with and empowered by Rome, the dreadful and terrifying beast. Compare Revelation 12:4 "And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth he might devour her child."). Some have said the one caught up to God is the church (eg, the respected commentary Matthew Henry says "we see how the church is represented in this vision") but how can it be since it the text clearly states a "male child, One to rule all nations with a rod of iron"? This type of interpretation occurs when one fails to read the text for its literal meaning (See Literal Interpretation)

So "Who is the Woman"? She has to be the nation of Israel. Why?

First, the Messiah is prophesied to come from the woman, Jehovah addressing the Serpent after he had tempted Eve to sin declaring...

Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the WOMAN, and between your seed and her seed; He (the Messiah) shall bruise you on the head (a deadly bruise), and you shall bruise him on the heel."

Joseph's dream in Gen 37:9 helps unravel the interpretation of the "12 stars" in Revelation 12, Moses recording that Joseph...

had still another dream, and related it to his brothers, and said, "Lo, I have had still another dream; and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars (cf. Rev 12:1 ''sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars'') were bowing down to me."

In this dream, the sun represents Jacob, the moon represents Joseph's mother Rachel, and the eleven stars are the sons of Israel who bow down to Joseph. In this sign with twelve stars, Joseph is now "among" the other tribes of Israel. In short, the 11 brothers (plus Joseph) headed the original 12 tribes that became the nation of Israel.

In Romans 9:4-5 Paul teaches the Christ must come from Israel describing the Jews as those...

who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the temple service and the promises, 5 whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

Jesus represents the fulfillment of Messianic Prophecy in Isaiah where we read that...

the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold (which means in essence "pay attention to what follows!"), a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel (God with us). (Isaiah 7:4)

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)

Thus the "woman clothed with the sun and the moon under her feet and on her head a crown of twelve stars and ...with child" represents the nation of Israel from whom came the Messiah.

Genesis 15:18 "In that day JEHOVAH made a COVENANT with Abram saying "To your descendants I have given this land from the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates 17:8 and I will give to you & to your descendants after you the land of your sojournings all the land of Canaan for an EVERLASTING possession & will be their God."

Editorial comment: Thomas Constable explains the woman as follows...

This sign was “in heaven,” not the sky but the heavenly scene John had been viewing in contrast with what he saw happening on earth. What this woman signifies puzzles interpreters. Some have felt that John was alluding to something that his original readers knew about, namely, the “mother of the gods” represented on Roman coins. Others see her as standing for “the believing covenant-messianic community” including the church. That this is not a symbol of Mary the mother of Jesus, as some have suggested, seems clear from the fact that she will be the object of persecution during the Tribulation (v. 13; cf. v. 17).In view of Old Testament imagery (cf. Isa. 54:1–6; Jer. 3:20; Ezek. 16:8–14; Hos. 2:19–20) and the following reasons, the “woman” seems to symbolize the nation of Israel. She wears a crown (Gr. stephanos) with the sun, moon, and stars, as God pictured Israel in one of the nation’s early symbolic representations (Gen. 37:9–11; cf. Isa. 26:17–18; 60:1–3, 20). There are many figurative references to Israel as a travailing woman in the Old Testament (Is. 26:17–18; 66:7–9; Jer. 4:31; 13:21; Mic. 4:10; 5:3). She eventually gave birth to Christ (v. 5). In Genesis 37:9–10, the sun corresponds to Jacob, the moon to Rachel, and the 12 stars to Israel’s 12 sons (cf. 7:5–8; 21:12). (Tom Constable's Expository Notes on the Bible) (Bolding added)

THE ''PARENTHESIS'' IN DANIEL 7

In Daniel 7 there is an apparent "skipping" (a parenthesis of time, a time gap) during the fourth kingdom to a time in which there are 10 kings or 10 toes from which a little horn arises, a time that has not yet transpired in world history. Three times Daniel records that the Little Horn removes 3 kings out of a confederacy composed of 10 kings. This reiterated specific detail allows the Jews alive at the time to clearly recognize the fulfillment of Daniel's prophecy of the Little Horn.

It is not uncommon for God to speak a prophecy in one OT verse that has fulfillments that are separated by literally thousands of years, the intervening time being a so-called "parenthesis" or "gap" of time. For example in several Messianic prophecies, there is a blending of the events of His first and second comings. A frequently used illustration is that of an observer looking at two far-off mountain peaks. Unaware that there is a great valley between the peaks, he assumes they are part of the same mountain, describing the two together.

God gives us an excellent example of such a "parenthesis" or "gap", based on His prophecy of the first and second coming of Christ in Isaiah 61:2...

1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives, and freedom to prisoners;

2 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn,

In Luke 4:18-19 Jesus quotes from Isaiah 61:1-2 inaugurating His ministry in the Jewish synagogue in Nazareth, opening the "book" (the scroll of the Old Testament) and reading...

"THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE DOWNTRODDEN, 19 TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD." (Note that in the NAS, when the OT is quoted the quotation is identified by the fact that it is in all capital letters).

Jesus stopped speaking in the middle of Isaiah 61:2 and Luke records that...

He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed upon Him.21 And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." (Luke 4:20-21)

Jesus left off the last section of Isaiah 61:2b which warns about..:

"the DAY OF VENGEANCE of our God"

This verse speaks of the second coming of Christ. Thus between Isaiah 61:2a and Isaiah 61:2b there has been at least a 2000 year gap or "parenthesis". And so it is not surprising or unique to find a similar gap of time in the the book of Daniel between the beginning of the fourth kingdom and the 10 king/toe stage of that kingdom.

The parenthesis in Daniel 2 and 7 is characteristic of how God often presents prophecy and is illustrated by Jesus' quoting the first part of Isaiah 61:1-2 as having been fulfilled in Himself. He did not say the DAY OF VENGEANCE was fulfilled bc that was a day yet future. So Isaiah 62:2 describes two different events separated by at least 2000 or more years. We will look more at the DAY OF VENGEANCE next week and relate it to the TEN HORNS & THE LITTLE HORN.
