Suffer hardship with me,
as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

 

I HAVE made him a witness to the peoples, A leader and commander for the peoples.--It was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings.--Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.
      Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.--We do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.
      The God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.

The unity of the Spirit.


THERE is one body, and one Spirit.-- for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, having been built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together is growing into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.
      Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, coming down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard, Coming down upon the edge of his robes.
      Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart

BELIEVING AND RECEIVING!

"All things whatsoever ye pray and ask for, believe that ye have received them, and ye shall have them."-- Mar 11:24 (R.V.).

IT IS not enough to pray and ask; we must believe that we have received. We can only do this when we know that we have asked according to God's Will (1Jo 5:14-15). This can be determined by referring to His Word, which teems with great and precious promises, like so many banknotes or cheques waiting to be cashed.

In prayer, it is well to be deliberate, to consider what we are about to ask, to discover some promise under which we can make our request; and then, having asked, to wait while the soul, so to speak, takes or appropriates what it needs. It may be that the time is not ripe for it to be actually bestowed, but the request is granted, and the coveted gift is already set aside in God's storehouse, labelled with the name of the petitioner, just as we sometimes get our Christmas presents ready and put them aside, and at the right moment they shall be dispatched.

PRAYER

We thank Thee, O God, for the daily gifts of Thy Providence, but above all for the gift of Thyself in Jesus our Lord, in whom all good and perfect gifts are contained. AMEN.

An Appeal; Deliverance

"And call upon Me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify Me"   (Psalm 50:15).

This is a promise indeed! Here is an urgent occasion -- "the day of trouble." It is dark at noon on such a day, and every hour seems blacker than the one which came before it. Then is this promise in season: it is written for the cloudy day. Here is condescending advice, "Call upon me." We ought not to need the exhortation: it should be our constant habit all the day and every day. What a mercy to have liberty to call upon God! What wisdom to make good use of it! How foolish to go running about to men! The LORD invites us to lay our case before Him, and surely we will not hesitate to do so. Here is reassuring encouragement: "I will deliver thee." Whatever the trouble may be, the LORD makes no exceptions but promises full, sure, happy deliverance. He will Himself work out our deliverance by His own hand. We believe it, and the LORD honors faith. Here is an ultimate result: "Thou shalt glorify me." Ah, that we will do most abundantly. When He has delivered us we will loudly praise Him; and as He is sure to do it, let us begin to glorify Him at once.

THE CLEAN FLAME OF LOVE
1John 4:1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14.

THIS aged apostle cannot get away from the counsels of love. All his mental movements circle about this “greatest thing in the world.” Once he would “call down fire upon men”; now the only fire he knows is the pure and genial flame of love. Beautiful is it when our fires become cleaner as we get older, when temper changes to compassion, when malice becomes goodwill, when an ill-controlled conflagration becomes a homely fireside.

And all the love we acquire we must get from the altars of God. “We love because He first loved us.” We can find it nowhere else. “Love is of God.” Why, then, not seek it in the right place? Why seek for palms in arctic regions, or for icebergs in the tropics? God is the country of love, and in His deep mines there are riches “unsearchable.”

And the gracious law of life is this, that every acquisition of love increases our powers of discernment. “He that loveth knoweth...!” It is as though every jewel we find gives us an extra lens for the discovery of finer jewels still. And thus the love-life is a continual surprise, and the surprise will be eternal, for the object of the wonder is the infinite love of God.

(1) GLOBAL PRAYER DIGEST - July 31, Japanese in Japan..

You would hardly know that school was in session at the Japanese elementary school. The halls were empty and so was the gym. If you looked very hard you might find one student and one teacher in a single classroom. There are no other children in this small town.

For 26 years Japan's birth rate has been declining. Unlike China, Japan has no laws restricting the number of children a couple could have. One reason Japan's birth rate is so low is because 70 percent of this country's young women don't want to get married or have children, according to a recent survey. During the last 10 years Japan has closed more than 2000 junior and senior high schools.

Many of Japan's schools have been converted into homes for the elderly. Japan now has more old people than children under 18. That has led to a shortage of workers that has forced many Japanese companies to rely on robots. If the birth rate continues dropping Japan may one day have more robots than people.

Pray that Japan's leaders will see Jesus Christ as the answer to their nation's population crisis. Ask God to lead missionary couples to be an example of the joys of love, marriage and family. Pray that faithful workers will show the Japanese that life has a spiritual dimension that can only be filled by having a relationship with Jesus Christ, the giver of life.-WK

Psalms 127:3 Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from Him.

This is God's wisdom! It's very easy for people who live on an island with a population of 125 million like the Japanese to view things differently. There are many ideas that the Japanese have embraced that come from the West, including population control. But they have not embraced the Savior.

Pray that the Japanese will embrace the wisdom from God that is far higher than any human reasoning.

For America

God addressed Israel in the following famous passage but the timeless principle is apropos to believers in America ...

If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people, and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. (2Chr 7:13, 14)

J. Barton Payne writes that "This great verse, the best known in all Chronicles, expresses as does no other in Scripture God’s requirement for national blessing, whether in Solomon’s land, in Ezra’s, or in our own. Those who believe must forsake their sins, turn from the life that is centered in self, and yield to God’s word and will. Then, and only then, will heaven send revival."

May God grant His children grace to plead for a Spirit driven, God glorifying, Word centered, Christ exalting revival of the Body of Christ in America.

First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. (1Ti 2:1,2)

Our Heavenly Father desires to hear His children cry out with "fasting, sackcloth and ashes" (Da 9:3), reflecting not the external appearance of our bodies, but more accurately the internal condition of our hearts - sinful (Da 9:5 - "we" not "they"!), rejecting His Holy Word (Da 9:6-"we"), shameful (Da 9:8-"us"), contrite, and broken (Ps 51:17), over our national rejection of God's righteous and holy Name...

Daniel's prayer (Da 9:3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19) is an excellent "template" for all saints to emulate as we begin to intercede with a sense of urgency for America and especially for God's Name and reputation considering that the world thinks of us as a "Christian nation" and we once called ourselves "One Nation Under God"!

Matthew Henry's comments on Lev 26:40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46 (directed first to Israel but applicable to any nation that rejects Him) 

Among the Israelites, persons were not always prosperous or afflicted according to their obedience or disobedience. But national prosperity was the effect of national obedience, and national judgments were brought on by national wickedness. Israel was under a peculiar covenant.

National wickedness will end in the ruin of any people,
especially where the Word of God and the light of the Gospel are enjoyed.

Sooner or later, sin will be the ruin, as well as the reproach, of every people.

Oh that, being humbled for our sins,
we might avert the rising storm before it bursts upon us!

(Note: Henry's comments were published in 1706 and national revival, the First Great Awakening, occurred in the 1730's and 1740's! Brethren, there is hope because there is a "God of hope"! Ro 15:13)
